Wrecking Cincinnati, 6/30/08

Nursing home
DOB: 1888
Died: June 2008
Cause of death: Vacant and open to the public, with an overgrown lot. The doors had been stolen off of the building. The City ordered it barricaded in March. There were no building code violations. Owned by Suburban Nursing & Mobile Homes, I believe. Another needless demolition.

WTF? How does this city ever think it is going to be taken seriously on a national scale if it continues to destroy its heritage while perpetuating and enabling its ever-increasing poverty rate/base with handouts and programs for mostly unappreciative recipients? Clearly, Cincinnati has no desire to rise above its current reputation -- it holds such potential, but if it doesn't wake up soon I don't know how much longer many of us will remain as residents (tax-paying, job-holding residents).

Another inheritance squandered, these all add up to an uninspiring city. It's too bad all of Avondale was not designated a local historic district long ago. And a strict zoning code enforced and adhered to when the city annexed it in the first place. Avondale was ruined under the city's watch. It surely would have benefited at any time from a preservation society with backbone or a loud voice, or even city govenment that doesn't give property owners the power to neglect or tear down a place they didn't build. You will rarely see the likes of a house like this built today only those short lived, impostors out in suburbia. It is another sad day for Avondale, and for craftsmanship, quality materials, interesting design, etc...all of which are nearly non-existent today. It's obvious from the buildings that were here, that at one time this city was intelligent. I would move if I could. It is too painful here.

I was born in South Avondale seventy-two years ago. I remained a resident for some twenty years before moving on. Avondale still holds wonderful memories of good folks, safe places and friends. The connection remains. I am now a retired writer and photographer...looking for those who lived, worked and grew-up in any part of Avondale...North or South. Tell me your stories, photographs, names, dates places etc. I am gathering information for a book describing Avondale it's history and it's people. Contact me at: Mike Peal .
This is a wonderful site and to be congratulated. MP

Thank you! I've long wondered why it's okay to just raze a structure just because it's on your property, without any consideration of the impacts it has on the neighborhood and the City.
