Is it just me or is the city tearing down more property recently?
It's not just you. There was a point in the middle of last year where there were a TON of demolitions.
Demolition activity has slowed to about 2-4 demolition permit applications a week now, where there once was a dozen or more.
However, the number of properties ordered vacant, condemned, or declared a public nuisance has continued to rise steadily.
The city is 'burning' through the Federal Stimulus monies. Our neighborhood group Knox Hill filed a federal level 'citizens complaint' with HUD regarding the cities failure to perform a proper section 106 review. That complaint is still under investigation by HUD.
The city is 'allegedly' reworking the section 106 review process but it does not negate the fact the city is still demoing homes using federal monies without a proper section 106 review being performed. In my mind if they have to rework the process to be in compliance then every property on the demo list must be reviewed again.
City legal is apparently 'hoping' this issue goes away, but our neighborhood group continues to forward info to HUD an OHPO and we continue to document Larry Harris, the Urban Conservators, failure to respond to our requests.
Personally I hope that HUD audits the city and forces them to pay back the monies, maybe it would teach certain city officials that the law actually applied to them. Most of these properties are historic eligible and could be restored. One reason why we need Land Banking.
